Magic and Meatloaf....

Is it wise to blog when you've been up since 3 AM? Probably not. The girl, for whatever reason just couldn't sleep. She was going to wake the whole house. Boy and Man needed their rest so I just ended up letting her get up. She PLAYED and ate until 5:30. She finally got sleepy but with only an hour until I would be back up, I decided just to ride it out and stay up. I'm sleepy.

I was thinking the other day, maybe yesterday, about what life is. How much of it is day to day normalcy. Get supper on the table. Get the clothes washed. Mop the floor. Empty the dishwasher. Get in the trenches, break nails and lose sleep. But, it's more.

There is beauty in putting a hot meal on the table for your family. There is an art to sitting down a favorite meal in front of them and having a conversation. Even something as humble as meatloaf on Monday takes skill and timing. There is quiet satisfaction in a stack of clean clothes warm from the dryer. There is accomplishment in a clean floor an an empty dishwasher.

Things can fall apart in any home when small things are missed. Small insignificant nothings can pile on, add up and prick at us. When the trash piles up and people resent each other for not taking it out. One for having to take it out after a long day of work. The other for having to ASK it be taken out when it's overflowing. It gets hard, so hard, when sitting down to dinner as a family becomes a rarity and not the norm. When so many little irritants start to scratch and wear you down.

But, I think, that in the big picture things have a way of setting themselves right. That the beauty in an ordinary life outweighs the little irritants. You know, it's OK not to go on some grand adventure. It's OK to get irritated at the trash. Sitting down and having a good cry because things aren't going the way you want them is not just cleansing. It's relieving. And empowering to know you can cry over a bad day without the world coming to an end.

And at the end of the day. In the dark of the night. The beauty that is this life lies in having someone there. Someone who shares your hopes. Your dreams. Who shares your pride and your joy when your children amaze you. Someone who shares your frustrations with the ordinary. Who feels your dreams as you do. Knowing that you have someone who shares your burdens, your failures and your triumphs is what makes everything better. Just knowing there is someone there who sees you. Really SEES who you are and knows that the ordinary nothing of what you do, means much more in the big picture.. Who gets that you are more than just the peanut butter in your hair and snot on your shoulder.

Reaching out in the dark and having a hand to hold makes everything OK. It makes what most would consider an ordinary life, extraordinary. Finding that whisper in the dark and hearing it speak of love, is magic.
