What a glorious way to ring in the first day of Fall. It is currently 41.9 degrees on my front porch. It's going to warm up over the weekend but these crisp days are coming more frequently. You have GOT to love that.
It's a different kind of Fall for us this year. There aren't too many maple trees or oak trees to fuss over. We plan a drive up through the mountains this weekend to see what color we can find but it'll be more subtle this year. There are some Canyons that DO boast quite a bit of color through the oak scrub and aspen trees. And this is the peak color weekend! We'll miss the majesty of our ancient mountains bathed in red, orange and gold. But we'll make due.
We've been making plans for the coming winter. It seems to be the thing to do around here. We've not spent a winter here yet and don't know what to expect, really. The people around us seem to be scrambling around getting ready, though. All the stores are having case lot sales and snow blowers are popping up for sale everywhere. It's kind of exciting really.
We took advantage of the case lot sale. I got 25 pounds of flour and 25 pounds of sugar. A case of corn, green beans and chili beans. They were just so cheap and are stuff we will use. I'm half-way through the sugar already. Of course, the fact that we've used so much leads me to believe we may drink WAY too much sweet tea.
We totally need to beef up our DVD collection. I've got to get out and get my library card. I can't believe I don't have it yet! I've got a list of who needs what as far as snow gear goes. We live less than 20 minutes from world class ski resorts. There is a homeschool ski class we contemplated for Nicholas but we decided we'd first just try tubing. We have to get chains for the truck. Some of the Interstates around here require chain use from November 1 - March. Those signs make me nervous.
It's a time to be industrious. A time to plan and make ready.
We wonder what the winter will be like here among the mountains. We live at a higher elevation than the highest point in WV. However, this is a high-plains desert. Then again, they get enough snow to have had the winter Olympics here in 2002. We keep getting differing stories about what to expect. So, we'll go boldly into the unknown and probably be ill prepared for what awaits.
It is all part of the adventure!
